SPPOT’s Day Opportunities

SPPOT provides adult (18+) day services with 1:1 and group support for adults and young people who have disabilties, as part of Pembrokeshire’s Day Opportunties scheme.

Our strong, established, staff team is trained and experienced in social care & dog training and teaching, Total Communication, canine behaviour, accredited training & much more.

The SPPOT DHQ building bright, safe, and very well equipped. It’s all on one level and is fully wheelchair accessible, including the garden, with safe access onto Haverfordwest Racecourse.

SPPOT offers dog care and training, outdoor adventures, and life-skills for disabled adults and young people. Everyone who joins SPPOT learns about dogs through our fully accessible accredited training programme while gaining a sense of purpose and improving wellbeing through fresh air and exercise.

By joining the SPPOT Team, you’ll develop vital skills like communication, teamwork, and responsibility. Our canine friends will even help you master navigation, budgeting, and cooking!

Every day at SPPOT is a little bit different, as different dogs and people join us each day, but there’s a good structure to each day:

8am We open for dogs & early staff & volunteers start, Tasks Timeline [housekeeping]

9am More staff and volunteers arrive to look after and play with the dogs.

10am All dogs and people have arrived.

10.15am Team Morning Meeting using our interactive, pictorial planner on our SmartBoard

10.15-12pm Active dog training sessions, accredited training and dog walking

12pm-1pm Lunctime & Dog Care: half an hour break and half an hour dog care, Tasks Timeline

After lunch, it’s a little more chilled……

1pm-2pm Active dog training sessions, accredited training and dog walking

2pm-3pm Enrichment for dogs & Wellbeing time for people, Team Meetings, Planning Sessions

3pm-4pm Enrichment for dogs & Wellbeing time for people, Staff Meeting, Tasks Timeline

4pm-6pm Dogs and people start to go home, relaxation time, admin sessions for staff

SPPOT is an Agored Cymru accredited training centre.

We run many training courses to learn about dogs but we also provide first aid training for people and dogs, Personal and Social Education, Wildlife in the Community, gardening, life skills and much more.

Our dog walks and wildlife studies take us all around our local area including the local beaches, woods, fields and footpaths.

There are many events we go to in the community, such as the Walk for Wellbeing, Volunteers Week and the County Show. We also run a full programme of events from SPPOT, including our annual Celebration Event with a presentation of all the accredited certificates achieved and our AGM.

The dogs who come to SPPOT belong to our customers, because we provide a therapeutic dog day service as well. We are regulated by the local authority as a dog daycare service as well as an adult day service.

In addition to the need for dogs to meet registration criteria to attend daycare, our fully qualified staff assess every dog before they come to SPPOT and continually thereafter.

To create a mutually therapeutic environment, dogs need to be of very good temperament, house trained, relatively quiet and walk reasonably well on lead

Three of our staff team are quallified to degree level in canine behaviour and training, and they train all our social care and teaching staff to at least Level 2.

How to Access a Day Service placement at SPPOT

To arrange a placement, a person will need an adult social care assessment, as follows:

If the person already has a social worker, that assessment may already have been completed, so please get in touch with us or the Day Opportunities Team.
If the person does not have a social worker, they or their family will need to make a referral through the council’s contact centre.

SPPOT Accredited Training Courses

SPPOT offers a range of accredited vocational learning for all our Volunteers, take a look at the courses below.

At SPPOT, everyone learns ethical, dog care from qualified staff, through fully inclusive training that requires no reading or writing. Founded by experts in social care and dog training, SPPOT’s accredited courses range from Entry Level to Level 3, covering everything from dog welfare to vocational dog walking. Our kind, effective methods benefit both our Volunteers and the dogs

Every course offered by SPPOT is intended to benefit dogs too, by promoting kind, effective methods of training and handling. We teach up to date, ethical, and scientifically proven techniques.

Please note that all training places are subject to meeting the access criteria and funding being arranged.

Safe Recruitment Policy

SPPOT is committed to safeguarding the welfare of adults at risk. We implement a rigorous recruitment and selection process to deter, identify, and reject individuals who pose a risk of harm to our service users.

Care & Welfare of Dogs & Puppies

Trainees will learn the essentials of dog and puppy care and welfare through working with dogs at SPPOT DHQ.

Dog Training Skills

Trainees learn foundation dog handling and training skills through reward-based training, including clicker training which is suitable for people of all abilities.

Vocational Dog Walking

Trainee Volunteer Dog Walkers learn all about walking dogs for customers. Trainees can have complete this unit while doing the Care & Welfare and Dog Walking unit.
